Why You Are Important!

Imagine the box above is a mirror. As you look into that mirror, you are looking at someone who is key to the mission and ministry of Jesus Christ through Presbyterian Church of the Cross.

At some point in your life you felt a call to faith—shakea time when Jesus Christ became real and vital to you as your Lord and Savior.

This faith has been a guidepost in your life. It has been measure to determine what is important in life..., what goals are worth pursuing..., what is worth spending your time, energy and effort..., in what should your life be anchored?

Your Faith has led you to join our church
(that is—your church and mine)!

Even a quick look at the New Testament reveals that faith in Jesus Christ was meant to draw believers together to live out our personal faith in a community of the faithful.

Together we can learn from each other. Together we can support each other—sharing joys and struggles. Together we can step out into the world to address some of the many needs that plague our city and our world.

peoplecross smallPaul referred to people of faith gathered together—sharing their gifts as the Body of Christ in the world. What makes this body so special is that we each bring our personal strengths, abilities, resources, and passions to the body. Where we are weak, someone else is strong. Where some others in the body lack what's needed for the job, we can offer our gifts.

Together we are the church and 'Our Church' is called to a special mission and ministry in the world—a mission and ministry we have been directed toward by Christ.

  • It is a ministry and mission that calls us to represent Christ in the world.
  • It is a ministry and mission that calls upon each of our individual gifts—our talents abilities and resources.
  • It is a ministry and mission that is less than it could be when any one of our members hangs back and does not participate and share.

And what are the directions that have led us to mission and ministry in Christ's name...?

In his parting words in Matthew's gospel Jesus gives us the 'Great Commission': "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you."
(Matthew 28:19-20)

And so we respond with worship and education, fellowship and mission.

In a parable in the last week of his life, Jesus told us how strongly God identified with the needs of hurting people. So much so that when we serve their needs it is like serving God, and when we ignore their needs it is like ignoring God: "I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me. . . . When you did it to one of the least of these . . . you did it to me."
(Matthew 25:35-40)

And so we respond with our mission that reaches out to our community through missions like Omaha Street School, Siena Frances House, OPS inner city schools, Heartland Hope Mission, our mission trips, and our partnership with our sister church in Gnozdovo..

You are important...

  • Because what separates a vital church that is fulfilling Christ's Mission is the commitment and involvement of its members.

  • Because Church of the Cross only moves forward when the vast majority of its members try joyously to do their part.

  • Because as the Church moves forward, each year new members must step forward and offer commitment in leadership and in contributing to the future as other leave us..., our younger members must step into larger rolls and deeper commitents so that our future is embraced with zeal.

  • Because God has blessed your life with gifts and resources that have made you who you are, and gratitude for God is often seeking a way to say "Thank you!'

  • Because in a time of transition in staff - the importance of each member is heightened.
