Tuesday Bible Study

Led by Dr. Marshall Zieman

October 1 – November 26

PCOC’s Tuesday Bible Study’s fall session will be held October 1 – November 26. The Bible Study is held on Tuesdays from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. Bring your Bible and join our group as we crowd into Room 15 to receive inspiration from God’s Word. This fall we will look together at the Old Testament book of Esther, completing the portion of the Bible we’ve been studying that deals with Israel’s Babylonian exile and return. We will see how God raised up Queen Esther “for such a time as this” and think together about how God is present in our lives to raise us up for service and witness in our times today. Come join us!

The theme of our fall Bible Study will be the book of Ruth. Reading from David Atkinson’s commentary: The book of Ruth is a tale of charm and delight. Goethe called it “the loveliest complete work on a small scale, handed down to us an an ethical treatise and an idyll.” Another writes, “No poet in the world has written a more beautiful short story.” The book tells about very ordinary people facing very ordinary events. We meet Naomi, who underwent hardship in famine and bereavement but eventually won peace and security. We meet Ruth, a young foreign woman from Moab who attached herself to her mother-in-law, Naomi, and to Naomi’s God. And we meet Boaz, who by marrying Ruth fitted into God’s purposes for history. Both King David and Jesus are numbered among their descendants.

Theologically the story of Ruth is a story about God’s providence. In our Tuesday studies we will think together about how God is working in our lives, too. Bring your Bible and an inquisitive mind and join us on Tuesdays at 1pm, Sept 11 – Nov 13.
