GATHERING IN GOD’S NAME

PRELUDE
“Amazing Grace” George Shearing

As the prelude begins, you are invited to begin your personal preparation for worship.

SILENT MEDITATION
(from the Presbyterian Church USA Book of Order)
“As there were in Old Testament times ELDERS for the government of the people, so the New Testament church provided persons with particular gifts to share in discernment of God’s Spirit and governance of God’s people…”

“The ministry of DEACON as set forth in Scripture is one of compassion, witness and service, sharing in the redeeming love of Jesus Christ for the poor, the hungry, the sick, the lost, the friendless, the oppressed, those burdened by unjust policies or structures or anyone in distress.”

CALL TO CONFESSION

PRAYER OF CONFESSION
We pray to you today for forgiveness, as we shy away from the gifts that you have given us. Instead of championing for justice, we continue to uphold systems that oppress others. Instead of proclaiming you as Lord, we look to leadership of those with power and money. Instead of practicing works of charity, we take more than our fair share. God, this is not who you created us to be. Help our light shine and guide us into a discipleship where we seek always your kingdom and your righteousness.

For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

“The Blessing of Being Salt and Light“ Dr. Zieman

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH
from The Confession of Belhar

We believe that God has entrusted the church with the message of reconciliation in and through Jesus Christ; that the church is called to be the salt of the earth and the light of the world, that the church is called blessed because it is a peacemaker, that the church is witness both by word and by deed to the new heaven and the new earth in which righteousness dwells.
