Gathering in God’s Name

Prelude — Joy — George Winston
As the prelude begins, you are invited to begin your personal preparation for worship.

Silent Meditation
Think of a time when you experienced courageous hospitality. What was that like for you?  How might God be calling you to show courageous hospitality to others?

Call to Worship — based on Psalm 97
The Lord is king! Let the earth rejoice!
We tremble at God’s awesome works!
The heavens proclaim God’s righteousness!
The Lord is our guard and protector!
Light dawns and joy fills our hearts!
Rejoice in the Lord and give thanks!

Confession and Pardon

Call to Confession

Prayer of Confession
Merciful God, you desire that the world might see your light shine through us. Yet we confess we are often too blinded by the glittering temptations of this world. We turn from your way, hurting the very ones we were called to serve, in our action and our inaction. We grow frustrated with each other, seeking to silence anything besides our own desires. We fail to see your righteousness and champion greed and discord in the name of power and popularity. Forgive us. Melt us and mold us into more faithful disciples, seeking your light, reflecting your mercy, and sharing your grace.

Silent Prayers of Confession

Lord, have mercy; Christ, have mercy; Lord, have mercy upon us.

Prayers of the People
The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.  For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

Anthem — “Laudate Dominum” from Vesperae Solennes de Confessore — W.A. Mozart
O praise the Lord, all ye nations; praise him, all ye peoples. For his loving kindness has been bestowed upon us, and the truth of the Lord endures forever. Glory be to the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end.

Our Response to God’s Word

*Affirmation of Faith — from The Confession of Belhar, South Africa, 1986
We believe in one holy, universal Christian church, the communion of saints called from the entire human family. We believe … that this unity of the people of God must be manifested and be active in a variety of ways; in that we love one another; that we experience, practice and pursue community with one another; that we are obligated to give ourselves willingly and joyfully to be of benefit and blessing to one another.

*Prayer of Dedication
