GATHERING IN GOD’S NAME

PRELUDE — Prelude and Fughetta — Healey Willan
As the prelude begins, you are invited to begin your personal preparation for worship.

SILENT MEDITATION
Prayer the Church’s banquet, Angel’s age, God’s breath in man returning to his birth, the soul in paraphrase, heart in pilgrimage, the Christian plummet sounding heaven and earth, engine against the Almighty, sinner’s tower, reversed thunder, Christ-side-piercing spear, the six-days transposing in an hour.
Prayer (I), George Herbert

CALL TO WORSHIP
Bless the Lord, O my Soul.
O LORD my God, you are very great.
You are clothed with honor and majesty,
Wrapped in light as with a garment.
Bless the Lord, O my Soul.
       Praise the LORD!

CONFESSION AND PARDON

CALL TO CONFESSION

PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Almighty God, too often we come to You asking for favors, instead of asking what it is that we can do for You. We ask You to help us solve the problems we create, long after we should have helped ourselves and others. We ask you to change the things around us, instead of asking You for the strength to change within ourselves. Forgive us, Lord. Reorder our desires. Help us to listen to You more than we speak. Help us to serve You more than we ask to be served. Amen.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. OUR RESPONSE TO GOD’S WORD

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH — from The Confession of Belhar
We believe that the church is called to be the salt of the earth and the light of the world, that the church is blessed because it is a peacemaker, that the church is witness both by word and by deed to the new heaven and the new earth in which righteousness dwells; that God’s life-giving Word and Spirit has conquered the powers of death, and therefore also of irreconciliation and hatred, bitterness and enmity, that God’s life-giving Word and Spirit will enable the church to live in a new obedience which can open new possibilities of life for society and the world. Amen.
