GATHERING IN GOD’S NAME

PRELUDE
“Trumpet Voluntary” John Stanley

As the prelude begins, you are invited to begin your personal preparation for worship.

SILENT MEDITATION
“Jesus said his Father’s House has many rooms. In this metaphor I like to imagine the Presbyterians hanging out in the library, the Baptists running the kitchen, the Anglicans setting the table, the Anabaptists washing feet with the hose in the backyard, the Lutherans making liturgy for the laundry, the Methodists stocking the fire in the hearth, the Catholics keeping the family history, the Pentecostals throwing open all the windows and doors to let more people in.”
Rachel Held Evans, Searching for Sunday: Loving, Leaving, and Finding the Church

CHORAL CALL TO WORSHIP
“This Is the Day” Jacobus Gallus

CALL TO WORSHIP
Hallelujah! Sing to the Lord a new song!
This day is God’s gift to us.
Hallelujah! Sing to the Lord a new song!
God has graciously gathered us together in this place.
Hallelujah! Sing to the Lord a new song!
God is good and faithful. God is our worthy of our praise. Let us worship God together!

PRAISE AND ADORATION

#611 Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee HYMN TO JOY (*Please stand, if you are able.) arr. James Biery

CALL TO CONFESSION

PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Merciful God, in Jesus, our risen Lord, we have seen your glory, yet our sinfulness often blocks out the light of Christ. We are quick to accuse and slow to confess. We find faults easily in others while ignoring our own shortcomings. We have squandered your gifts. We have turned from your ways. We have ignored your Word. Have mercy on us, compassionate God. Pour out your Holy Spirit on our lives. Wash us with your love and cleanse us with your grace that day by day we might move closer to the people you would have us become.

The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

SERMON
“Living Debt-Free” Dr. Zieman

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH
from The Confession of 1967, 9.15
God ’s sovereign love is a mystery beyond the reach of the human mind. Human thought ascribes to God superlatives of power, wisdom, and goodness. But God reveals divine love in Jesus Christ by showing power in the form of a servant, wisdom in the folly of the cross, and goodness in receiving sinful men and women. The power of God’s love in Christ to transform the world discloses that the Redeemer is the Lord and Creator who made all things to serve the purpose of God’s love.
